Matthew McConaughey Goes Into Detail About Why He Was Estranged From His Mom for 8 Years

Matthew McConaughey is going into detail about why he and his mother Kay were estranged for 8 years.

“Mom and I had a rough patch for about eight years right after I got famous, but we healed that up back in 2004,” he said on Red Table Talk about the beginning of his fame which came after A Time to Kill.

“I started having my weekly Sunday call home to call my mother … mother wouldn’t answer the phone, a fan of my fame was answering the phone,” he continued. “I was trying to find my own balance with fame and I would share things with her and to whatever amount of innocence it was — we can now completely laugh about it — but some of those things I would share might show up in the six o’clock news three days later.”

He pointed to one house tour she gave to “Hard Copy,” in which she revealed embarrassing tidbits about him as she showed off his bedroom and bathroom.

“Mom’s leading the camera, ‘Here’s the bed where I caught him in Michelle, it’s no big deal, because he didn’t last,’” he said. “‘And here’s the bathroom, walked in on him and caught him doing you know what.’ I’m going, ‘Holy shit, mom!’”

Eventually, time healed the wounds and he was able to bring her to events and let her into his life.

“I said, ‘Mom, hit that red carpet, tell them all the stories you want,’ and she’s been great about it since,” he added.

“I was enjoying his fame more than he was, I guess,” Kay added.

Matthew McConaughey Talks Finding Alone Time for Him & Wife Camila Alves During Quarantine

Matthew McConaughey is opening up about life in quarantine with his family.

The 51-year-old actor appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Monday (November 16) to chat about his new memoir “Greenlights” and he discussed his 2020.

Matthew has been quarantined at home in Texas with wife Camila Alves, their three children – son Levi, 12, daughter Vida, 10, and son Livingston, 7 – and his 88-year-old mom Kay.

“This has been going on for 7 months, since the quarantine began,” Matthew said. “It’s been going on long enough to sometimes say, when you say how many kids you have in the house, I say four: a 12, 10, 7 and 88 year old… She still goes to bed after me and wakes up before me!”

Matthew also opened up about finding alone time for him and Camila.

“Sometimes you go through the day and you got the kids’ remote schooling, you get everyone set up, you’re doing meals and running around. I’m doing my work, she’s doing hers, and sometimes it’ll be at 9:30 at night or 10 o’clock when we actually look at each other and go, ‘Oh, hi, how are you?’” he said. “But she’s really good at scheduling and we’re getting a little bit better at creating some structure, not only for the kids but for us and saying, ‘Hey, from this time to this time don’t come knocking on the door. We’re gonna have our time.’”

Last week, Matthew opened up about the rom-com he’d consider doing a sequel for.

Matthew McConaughey Would Consider Doing a Sequel to One of His Rom-Coms

Matthew McConaughey stopped doing romantic comedies over a decade ago and he rebuilt his career into one that led him to an Oscar win.

In the process, Matthew turned down a $14.5 million paycheck.

“No, I never regretted that,” Matthew said on E!’s Daily Pop. “That was during a two-year hiatus I was taking from the romantic comedies that I’d been doing and the action-adventures I had been doing.”

He added, “I was very clear…look, intellectually, that was a hard one to say ‘no’ to. Just looking at that sheer number—are you kidding me? Wow. But I knew I needed to remain on my sabbatical from the films I had been doing for my own soul. And so, no, I never regretted it. But boy, saying ‘no’ to that really solidified my stance for myself. I was like, okay, I’m not breaking now.”

Despite swearing off rom-coms, Matthew seems open to doing a How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days sequel.

“Possibly,” he said. “I mean, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is teed up, you know, teed up for one that you could easily do a sequel. And that was a really good one. As far as romantic comedies go, that was a really good one. And it lasts! People still love that one. I enjoyed that one quite a bit.”

Matthew recently opened up about the possibility of his kids going into show business.

The 51-year-old Academy Award-winning actor, who revealed he was “blackmailed” into having sex at 15 and “molested by a man” at 18 after being “knocked unconscious in the back of a van,” explained why he did not go into further detail about being sexually assaulted as a teen in new memoir Greenlights.

During an appearance on Tamron Hall on Friday (November 6), he discussed how he wrote about those incidents in the book.

“Ultimately, there’s nothing that I feel is constructive about the details. I feel like those details, unless I had a really good constructive way that I saw it that could be relatable to other people, I felt like those details could have just been grabbed and reported for voyeurism,” he said.

“They could’ve been the thing that every single show was going to go ‘Read about the details of when Matthew was molested,’ or ‘Read about when he got blackmailed,’ and that’s the wrong headline. I write also in the book I’ve never felt like a victim,” he continued.

“Those two events happened to me at 15 and 18. If they would’ve happened to me younger, maybe I would’ve been more confused. But when they happened to me, it was very clear to me, that they were wrong, that they were not ideal, that they were not how it’s supposed to be,” Matthew went on to say.

“So I think having that clarity means that it’s probably why it didn’t stick with me and confuse me later on or left me having a non-realistic view of the way the world is supposed to work.”

He also opened up about his kids, and whether he’d allow them to work in show business.

“Yes, it is his birthday today! Happy birthday my love!” Camila continued. “Watch the video to the end what my daughter said is how I feel sometimes! 😂😂 And let’s all stay calm and find new ways to unite for our future.”

Matthew McConaughey Won't Stop His Kids From Going Into Show Business If They Want To

Matthew McConaughey has opened up about his three children he shares with wife Camila Alves in a brand new interview.

The 50-year-old actor revealed that he and his eldest son, Levi, are a lot alike in many ways.

“Levi is the most considerate person I’ve ever met,” Matthew shared. “Yeah, he’s extremely considerate and a very, very sensitive young man and really cares — really caring kid. And he, like me, has a very much perfectionist bone in him.”

He continued that Levi is “a great salesman, he’s a great debater, he’s a great storyteller, he’s becoming a really good storyteller. He and I, we riff up stories and he knows, we give a little wink when we embellish somewhere, like ‘Oh, that didn’t happen, but hey, it’s better for the story,’ but for the most part he’s very active and he’s becoming a good buddy of mine now as he’s reaching 12.”

Matthew also spoke about whether he’d be okay if Levi, daughter Vida and youngest son, Livingston, wanted to go into entertainment like he did.

“Look, I want them to do whatever it is they’re fashioned to do,” he shared. “Whatever they have an innate ability to do, and are willing to put in the work to get better at it. Whatever that is, I want them to do that. If that becomes something in the industry that I’m in? Bravo. I’ve met some of the most wonderful people in my life in my industry, I love what I do. Everybody on a set of a film or a TV show has to be great at their particular job for it to work.”

Matthew added that all three are kind of already in the industry, as he’s “started to employ them. They do all my photo shoots now. They did the Longbranch ads. Levi did.”

“He’s the DP, he’s the one going out there, we’re setting up the GoPros. We’re doing the editing. So, maybe I’ll have a little McConaughey production crew here, and we’ll be a one-stop shop.”

Just last week, Camila shared a rare photo of Levi, and many commented of just how much he looks like Matthew. See it here!
